- Cat Stevens – I Love My Dog
Cat Stevens pretty much says it all in the title. This acoustic track from the great signer-songwriter is dedicated to his furry friend. In the song, he compares the love he has for his dog with the love he has for his partner. The only difference? He says his dog will always be there while his love for his lady might fade over time. Who knew Cat’s such a savage? 2. Baha Men – Who Let the Dogs Out?
This ridiculous song from 2000 falls under the genre of junkanoo, a style of street dance music from the Caribbean. First released by Tridaian musician Anslem Douglas, it was the Baha Men’s cover that went global. “Who Let the Dogs Out?” topped the charts in Australia and New Zealand and was also the fourth biggest-selling single of 2000. Apparently, the song is about feminism, with the dogs in the lyrics meant to represent men who behave badly. You learn something new every day. 3. George Clinton – Atomic Dog
Get a bit of P-funk into you with this futuristic number from the great George Clinton. While not a big success when first released in 1982, “Atomic Dog” has been sampled many times over the years by hip-hop artists. The most notable sample occurs in Snoop Dogg’s hit single “(Who am I) What’s My Name?” “Atomic Dog” has appeared in many TV shows and commercials since dropping in the 80s and is even played during of New York Liberty basketball games. 4. Elvis Presley – Hound Dog
While it’s true the original by Big Mama Thornton is a real barn burner, it’s the Elvis Presley cover that gets the nod here. It’s considered one of the great rock and roll songs and is a major reason Presley became such a star. Similar to the Baha Men’s “Who Let the Dog Out?,” “Hound Dog” is about a woman berating a selfish man. Despite this, Presley still pulls the song off, albeit with a few minor lyric changes. 5. The Beatles – Martha My Dear
This piano-driven ballad is about Paul McCartney’s favorite pooch Martha. She was an Old English Sheepdog that McCartney had as a pet during his younger days. Incredibly, McCartney played all the instruments on “Martha My Dear,” bar the orchestral instruments that were played by session musicians. It’s a great little pop tune for dog lovers. 6. Sublime – I Love My Dog
This is a tribute to Bradley Nowell’s canine buddy Lou Dog, who appears on the cover of Sublime’s debut album. Not only is “I Love My Dog” a reggae-tinged ode to his dog, but it’s incredibly almost a complete cover of “I Luv, I Jah” by Bad Brains. Songs about dogs don’t get much better. 7. Bobby “Blue” Bland – I Wouldn’t Treat a Dog (The Way You Treated Me)
Bobby “Blue” Bland had a bit of success in the 60s and 70s with his blues-inspired soul music. One of his bigger hits was this tale about a man who is treated worse than a dog by his lady. Reaching the number three spot on the US R&B Billboard Charts, “I Wouldn’t Treat a Dog (The Way You Treated Me)” has a nice groove to it and is a great song for any playlist about doggos. 8. Neil Young – Old King
This charming country tune from Neil Young is an ode to his traveling companion Elvis, who he refers to as King in the song. Young sings about all the good times they had together, while also reminding us “that hound dog is history.” The song is taken from his 1992 album Harvest Moon, best known for the hit title track. 9. Snoop Dogg: Doggy Dogg World
You can’t have a list of songs about dogs without featuring Snoop Dogg. Although this G-funk production from Dr. Dre doesn’t really have anything to do with dogs, it’s a great showcase for Snoop Dogg to show what he’s all about. It also features Snoop’s group Tha Dogg Pound (Kurupt and Dat Nigga Daz) and The Dramatics. It’s the sort of tune you put on during a smoking session with your buddies when you want to sit back and relax. 10. Elton John – Gulliver/It’s Hay Chewed
Although not one of Elton John’s big hits, “Gulliver/It’s Hay Chewed” is still a top tune from the English singer. Written by his longtime writing partner Bernie Taupin, it’s about the passing of his dog, Gulliver. It’s a pretty somber tune that makes the most of John’s incredible vocals.

- The B-52’s – Quiche Lorraine
The B-52’s are well known for crafting catchy tunes that are also very strange, and “Quiche Lorraine” is no different. Unsurprisingly, the song has nothing to do with quiche. It’s about a runaway pet named Quiche La Poodle who is chased by a Great Dane. It’s a weird and upbeat tune with frontman Fred Schneider’s unique delivery making it an interesting listen. 12. Dolly Parton – Me and Little Andy
This is possibly the saddest song on the list. “Me and Little Andy” is about a child named Sandy and her little dog Andy. Abandoned by her mother and neglected by her father, Sandy runs away from home with her pet dog Andy. She turns up on the doorstep of a stranger who feeds her and Andy and lets them stay the night. This is where things take a turn for the worse. Both Sandy and Andy pass away in their sleep. The good news is they are reunited in heaven, so it all works out in the end. Kinda. This isn’t the only Dolly Parton tune about dogs, with the blonde bombshell also singing about her deceased pets on “Cracker Jack” and “Gypsy, Joe And Me.” 13. Led Zeppelin – Bron-Y-Aur Stomp
This acoustic ditty from Led Zeppelin III is all about Robert Plant’s love for his blue-eyed Merle dog. The dog is named Strider after the character Aragorn from the Lord of the Rings. It’s not until the final verse of “Bron-Y-Aur Stomp” that you realize Plant is singing about his dog and not a female companion. 14. Miley Cyrus – The Floyd Song
Floyd was Miley Cyrus’ favorite pet who died in April 2014 after being attacked by coyotes. Wanting to express the grief she felt in song, Cyrus came up with the lo-fi “The Floyd Song (Sunrise).” According to Genius, Cyrus first got the Alaskan Klee Kai in 2011. It was also her favorite dog. “I know I don’t mean it but I wish he would’ve taken me with him this is unbearable,” she tweeted on April 1. “What am I gonna do without him?” 15. Norah Jones – Man of the Hour
Norah Jones is given the choice between her man or her dog. She chooses her dog. As she sings in “Man of the Hour,” her dog will “never lie” and doesn’t cheat. While she understands he won’t get her flowers or join her in the shower for some one-on-one action, Jones is happy that he also won’t make her cry. She makes a pretty good case for women having a pet dog rather than a boyfriend, to be honest. 16. Johnny Cash – Old Shep
There are plenty of different covers of this Red Foley tune, but it’s hard to go past the stripped-back version recorded by Johnny Cash. It’s another sad song about Cash having to put down his dear old dog Shep. But on the bright side, he believes he is going to heaven. Cash recorded the song for his 1975 record, The Johnny Cash Children’s Album. Other notable tunes on this great compilation are “Little Magic Glasses, “I Got a Boy (and His Name is John),” and “Call of the Wild.” 17. Luke Bryan – Little Boys Grow Up and Dogs Get Old
Here’s another tear-jerker, although at least this time the dog survives. “Little Boys Grow Up and Dogs Get Old” is about a young boy who’s grown up with his black Lab Bandit by his side throughout his youth. When he decides to head to Tennessee, he realizes he won’t be able to take his good pal with him and is forced to say goodbye until he returns. 18. Pet Shop Boys – I Want a Dog
It’s pretty clear from the title of this track that the Pet Shop Boys want a dog of some sort. They specifically want a chihuahua and make their distaste for cats known in the second verse. “I Want a Dog” is taken from the duo’s 1988 album Introspective and is a great slice of 80s disco trash. 19. John Hiatt – My Dog and Me
There isn’t much John Hiatt hasn’t sung about, so a song describing man’s relationship with dogs isn’t that much of a surprise. “My Dog and Me” focuses on that special bond you have with your dog. It’s a whimsical country number with Hiatt’s distinct vocals singing about how he’s “never felt so free” when “it was just my dog and me.” 20. Pink Floyd – Seamus
At just 2:15, this is the shortest song on this list. It’s a bit of a jokey track by Pink Floyd that serves as the closing track to the first side of Meddle. It even features Seamus the Border Collie (Humble Pie’s Steve Marriott’s dog) howling throughout. The humorous song didn’t really find an audience with fans, but makes our list as it’s still a song about dogs. David Gilmour told the group’s biographer, “I guess it wasn’t really as funny to everyone else [as] it was to us.” Despite that, it makes for an interesting listen, although not one you’ll be coming back to in any hurry.
