The biggest city in New Zealand’s North Island, Auckland, has been recognized as the world’s most liveable city. The annual Global Liveability Index report from The Economist’s Intelligence Unit (EIU) found Auckland is the place you want to be during a pandemic. The top 10 cities reflect this, with New Zealand and Australian metropolises dominating thanks to the way they’ve handled Covid-19. “New Zealand’s tough lockdown allowed their society to reopen and enabled citizens of cities like Auckland and Wellington to enjoy a lifestyle that looked similar to pre-pandemic life,” the report reads. The judging of each city looked at five key features: stability (25%), healthcare (20%), culture and environment (25%), education (10%), and infrastructure (20%).  Auckland managed to secure an impressive aggregate score of 96.0, just 1.8 points ahead of Osaka, Japan. Another New Zealand city, the capital Wellington (93.7), came in at number four, while Australia had four cities in the top 10, Adelaide (third with 94.0), Perth (sixth with 93.3), Melbourne (ninth with 92.5), and Brisbane (tenth with 92.4). “The Covid-19 pandemic has taken a heavy toll on global livability,” the report also stated, highlighting Europe and North America’s decline due to the border closures. “Cities across the world are now much less liveable than they were before the pandemic began, and we’ve seen that regions such as Europe have been hit particularly hard.” While the report doesn’t list all 140 cities judged, it does list the 10 least livable cities.
