Spotify is expanding its operations with the release of its first smart player, Car Thing. The oddly named device enables you to listen to music, news, and podcasts hands-free from the comfort of your car. Aimed at Spotify Premium users (you must have a paid subscription in order to use the device), the Car Thing is a nifty touch screen piece of tech that attaches to your air conditioning vents. Using your smartphone’s wi-fi connection, you can listen to Spotify’s entire catalogue without having to worry about being caught driving and using your phone. You can use the touchscreen to choose your favorite playlist, turn the large dial to pick particular songs or use voice commands to select the latest episode of your favorite podcast. There are also four preset buttons so you can listen to the newest podcasts, artists, or albums with the touch of your finger.

If you’re thinking Spotify is getting into the audio game, think again, with the streaming giant releasing a statement explaining their reason for the creation of the Car Thing. Our focus remains on becoming the world’s number one audio platform—not on creating hardware—but we developed Car Thing because we saw a need from our users, many of whom were missing out on a seamless and personalized in-car listening experience. No matter the year or model of your vehicle, we feel everyone should have a superior listening experience. With Car Thing, we’ll now be bringing our entire catalogue of music and podcasts to a wider range of users across an even wider range of vehicles. The Car Thing is currently available for a limited time for free to those living in America, with the only cost being postage. It’s expected to retail for $79.99 when it becomes more widely available.   Spotify Car Thing
