Every couple needs a chance to blow off some steam and remember why they fell in love with each other in the first place, and a romantic getaway will do exactly that. Now you just have to choose somewhere you’ll both enjoy, and right about now is probably where you’re beginning to remember why you haven’t been on one recently. To make things easier and more romantic for you and your partner, we’ve found the 12 most romantic places to travel for you, no matter what type of couple you are.
- Paris, France
Ah, the city of love (or lights if you’re bitterly single). As soon as you breathe in Parisian air, you’ll want to get your romance on. There’s something in the air (as well as the loving-home scent of freshly baked cakes and croissants from world-famous patisseries) that makes even the most unromantic men want to sweep their partner off their feet. Picturesque coffee shops, restaurants, and florists on cobblestone streets will guide you through Paris to loved-up landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower (a good spot to propose FYI) and Pont des Arts Bridge. The bridge used to hold thousands of padlocks that couples would write their names on, attach to the bridge, and throw the key into the river Seine, symbolizing a love that could never be unlocked. While they were recently removed (but not unlocked) for safety reasons, there’s something romantic about being in the same spot where many soulmates stood and declared their everlasting love for one another. If you go to Paris in the winter, you’ll want to visit the museums that hold paintings of muses and capture love stories from over the centuries. If you’re planning a trip in spring or summer, get ready to ride bikes through the city with a baguette in your basket and picnic in the beautiful gardens of Paris. You’re never too far from a romantic spot in this city. 2. Santorini, Greece
Now, you’ve probably heard of Santorini before as it’s one of the most popular honeymoon destinations, and for good reason. Santorini is a Greek island found in the middle of the Aegean Sea, home to fresh, but traditional, white and blue buildings with pretty pink climbing flowers (think Mamma Mia) perfectly slotted into the cliffside. The majority of Santorini’s resorts come with a private balcony and a hot tub overlooking the ocean, so if you’re a fan of watching golden sunsets with your partner (does it get any more romantic?), Santorini is the place to be. It’s a quiet island with little to do except spend quality time with your other half admiring the beauty of the Greek island, so you can be sure you’ll get that 1-on-1 time you’ve been missing out on at home. Nothing will bring you and your partner closer than a romantic adventure around the island on a scooter. Feel the wind in your hair and your partner’s arms around your waist as you drive down the scenic roads of the island. 3. The Maldives
Sandy white beaches and crystal-clear water await in the Maldives. The Maldives is a collection of 26 small islands that are all a hop, skip, and a boat ride away from each other. Each island typically has only one resort with a limited number of guests, so if privacy is what you seek, you’ll find it in the Maldives. They typically have the choice of on land or on water bungalows, but to make things even more romantic, we suggest splurging on a water bungalow. Here you can expect a private balcony, transparent floors that feel like you’re walking on water, and a master bedroom with a view of the ocean that you’d never get bored of waking up to. In a water bungalow you’ll feel like the only two people in the world. The resorts in the Maldives sure do know how to do romance since they’re prepping for a proposal every other day, but no pressure, you can still tap into your romantic side without a diamond ring. From 1-on-1 candlelit dinners on the beach to rose petals and swan folded towels on your bed, your partner is guaranteed to feel the love. No matter which island out of the 26 you choose to stay at, we insist that you visit Vaadhoo Island, where you’ll find a beach that glows in the dark and looks like the sky’s stars have fallen into the ocean. Okay, it’s actually caused by bioluminescent organisms, which does sound a little less romantic, but this will be the last thing on your mind when you witness the phenomenon, so stick with a “sea of stars” when you sell it to your partner. To increase the chances of seeing the glowing plankton, it’s best to book your romantic trip from mid-summer to winter. 4. Sabi Sands Game Reserve, South Africa
A safari might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think “romantic” but imagine the sun setting over the wilderness as you watch zebras, elephants, and lions in their natural habitat. Plus, you’ll get to tick off one of your bucket list items and share the experience with someone you love and that’s romantic, right? Sabi Sands Game Reserve is a 5-star safari and resort where you can live in the same place as the animals do but in style. From your room, you can watch them gather around a watering hole or have a giraffe reach up and give you a good morning kiss. And at the end of the day when you’ve finished exploring, lie back on your bed to cuddle and admire the stars. 5. Venice, Italy
Is there any culture more passionate than Italy? Whether it’s pizza or their partners, Italian’s love hard. A lust for life and everything it has to offer, including your other half, will surely rub off on you in the streets of Venice and stick with you long after you’re back home – thank you Venice. The tiny streets force you to get up and personal with your love and soak up the Italian culture from historic bridges to romantic cafes. If you prefer to travel by water, take a gondola ride through Venice where you can see sights that you can’t reach on foot. It’ll be you, your love, and the gondola, but you won’t even tell he’s there as the ambiance will make you want to kiss your partner’s face off. For a bite to eat, visit St. Mark’s Square, or Piazza San Marco in Italian, where the locals show off their home-baked masterpieces and you can support small businesses, or take a seat at one of the best places in town for Italian food that surround the square. Grab a glass of wine, share your favorite memories, and tell your partner “Te amo.” 6. Sonoma Valley, California
Speaking of wine, if you like to think of yourself as a wine connoisseur, put your skills to the test on a romantic getaway to Sonoma Valley with more than 100 wineries to visit. If you have an upcoming anniversary, what better way to celebrate than popping open a few bottles of wine with a view! But which winery should you visit with so many to choose from? We’re one step ahead of you. If you liked the sound of picnics in Paris earlier, Landmark Vineyards is a charming winery with idyllic picnic grounds to take a moment to relax with your partner. Here you’ll find a selection of local cheeses and meats to build your own charcuterie board to complement your chosen bottle of wine or two (but who’s counting it’s a special occasion). If you want to feel like you’re outside of California, try Ferrari-Carano Vineyards and Winery for an Italian feel. Tastings take place in the Villa Fiore or II Terraza – sound Italian yet? Walk (or stumble) through five acres of land with secret footpaths, bridges, streams, and impressive flower displays no matter the time of year.

7. Grand Cayman, Caribbean
Grand Cayman is the wealthiest island in the Caribbean and is included in our top 12 because you and your partner deserve the best of the best for your romantic trip. Seven Mile Beach is, you guessed it, seven miles (which I find extremely satisfying as I realize it’s also number seven on our list) of heaven with luxury resorts along the entire beachfront. No one and nowhere does tropical cocktails like the Caribbean. Spend the day following the sun and sipping one-of-a-kind pina coladas before taking a boat out to Stingray City for, let’s say, unconventional romance. According to a legend, if you share the love and kiss one of their stingrays, you’ll receive seven years (oh how I love a happy coincidence) of good luck. So, pucker up and take home 14 years of good luck between the both of you. 8. The Cotswolds, England
A little different from the Caribbean but romantic nonetheless is the Cotswolds, hundreds of acres of pure countryside bliss. English tea rooms, fancy pub grub, and country walks are right on your cottage’s doorstep. The Cotswolds are known for their traditional English villages that take you back in time from Bourton-on-the-Water to Bilbury. If you and your partner enjoy a cozy night in, make sure to get a cottage with a fireplace, so you can snuggle up with a hot chocolate. But don’t forget to pack your wellies! (I learned the hard way). 9. Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort East Village, Finland MKeerati / Shutterstock.com For couples who aren’t afraid of freezing temperatures and snow, we recommend visiting Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort East Village, one of the world’s best places to watch the Northern Lights. If you thought stars were romantic, take it up a notch with the Northern Lights and be blown away with vibrant green swirls in the sky. You’ll have a front-row seat with the choice of a completely glass igloo or a half cabin and half glass igloo if you’d like a combo of traditional and modern. During the day while you wait for the lights you can go sledding, visit the sauna, or explore the snowy forests. Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort East Village recommends visiting their resort between late August and April, so you’re all good to go. However, as it’s a natural phenomenon, seeing the Northern Lights can’t be promised, but going during this period will give you the best possible chance. 10. Bali, Indonesia
Bali provides the perfect romantic escape for you and your partner surrounded by nature and the opportunity to disconnect from the outside world, which is just one of the reasons why it’s a go-to honeymoon destination. There’s a wide variety of places to stay from treetop hotels in the middle of the jungle to beachfront resorts. Whatever budget you’re on, Bali can deliver the ultimate romantic getaway with something for every couple. Indonesia knows how to live lush, so you can expect huge breakfast spreads, infinity pools, and couples’ massages, which makes it easier to get your romance on. 11. Cappadocia, Turkey
Cappadocia is a region in Turkey famous for its hot air balloons that brighten up the sky with all their different colors, almost like a packet of skittles exploded in the sky. Jump in a hot air balloon and watch the sunset from the sky as you graciously float through the mountains. You can even enjoy them whilst you’re on the ground as you watch them glide by and take in the panoramic views of the rocky valley. 12. New York City, USA
If we’re talking romance, we’ve got to talk Central Park in New York City. Take a romantic stroll through the park or rent bikes for the day if you’re more of an active couple, just don’t forget to stop off for lunch at The Loeb Boathouse. If you want to feel like part of a movie, you and your other half can live out a Disney fantasy as Prince and Princess in a horse-drawn carriage ride. It’s a little extra but we’re here to turn the romance all the way up! After the sun goes down make sure to visit one of New York City’s rooftop bars such as 230 Fifth or Somewhere Nowhere and watch the entire skyline light up, after you’ve visited all the iconic landmarks, of course.
