If you’ve ever dreamt about experiencing a week in space, your dreams could soon become a reality. The Orbital Assembly Corporation (OAC) has just announced they are set to begin construction on the first space hotel. The Voyager Station will be a fully operational space resort capable of accommodating 400 people. Plans for the space hotel were first revealed way back in 2012 by the Gateway Foundation, which went on to establish OAC in 2018 for the specific purpose of building the first space hotel. OAC has confirmed construction on the Ferris wheel-shaped hotel will begin in 2025. Along with first-class cabins for people to sleep in, the space hotel will include bars, restaurants, a movie theater, and even a gym. It’s even said there’ll be a dedicated concert venue so music lovers can experience rocking out in space.
“Voyager Station is a rotating space station designed to produce varying levels of artificial gravity by increasing or decreasing the rate of rotation. Artificial, or simulated, gravity is essential to long-term habitation in space,” the official website explains. “The station will be designed from the start to accommodate both national space agencies conducting low gravity research and space tourists who want to experience life on a large space station with the comfort of low gravity and the feel of a nice hotel.”
The space hotel will be made up of two circular rings, with The Independent reporting the inner construction will be a dedicated docking hub, and the outer ring “the backbone of the station, providing mounting for habitable modules, solar panels, radiators, and a rail transport system.” Pods attached to the outer ring will be used as hotel rooms for guests or as research stations for visiting NASA astronauts. The design of the Voyager Station is inspired by space scientist Wernher von Braun, whose compositions for a futuristic space station were a big influence on Stanley Kubrick during the filming of 2001: A Space Odyssey. While there is no word on how much it will cost to stay at the Voyager Station, you’ll probably want to start putting some money away now if you want to reserve your spot.
