Netflix is positively brimming with kick-ass streaming film and TV during May. There are big-ticket blockbuster new releases from Hollywood, a host of classic genre movies, and new release dramas to pique everyone’s interests. There’s also a beloved film franchise on limited release from Netflix, so make sure to check out the top and start planning your binge-watching accordingly.
- Back to the Future Trilogy (Limited Release)
Coming to Netflix: May 1 Language: English The Skinny: Having Back to the Future available on streaming is fun for the whole family – the original was a beloved movie from my childhood that grew into one of the greatest film franchises of all time with two great follow-ups. Join Marty, Doc, Biff, and the Delorean as they zap back and forwards in time to sort out the McFly family line while trying to avoid mishaps at every turn. Back to the Future holds up pretty well (except maybe the hovercraft skateboards) but more than anything else it represents the fun we’re supposed to have when watching movies.
- The Best of the Best (1989)
Coming to Netflix: May 1 Language: English The skinny: There was nothing better in the late 80s and early 90s than watching an underdog bunch of misfit American’s led by a mullet sporting Eric Roberts take on the big bad South Korean Taekwondo national team. It’s got everything; fight montages and hot sax, leadership quandaries, Asian mountain schools of martial arts, team bonding bar fights, and some pretty tight in-ring action sequences. Sure, you know exactly what you are getting, but it’s 90 minutes of quality shits and giggles.
- Mystic River (2003)
Coming to Netflix: May 1 Language: English The skinny: Sean Penn (Best Actor), Kevin Bacon, and Tim Robbins (Best Supporting) star in this two-time Oscar-winner directed by Clint Eastwood. It would have won more awards if not for the final installment of the Lord of the Rings cleaning up. Mystic River is taut and atmospheric throughout, combining a procedural thriller (based on a brilliant Dennis Lehane novel) with fantastic insights into grief and small-town suspicions. Bookended by harrowing career-best performances from Penn and Robbins, Mystic River is a film from the top drawer and has to be a must-watch for May. I’d also highly recommend The Lovely Bones for another heavy-duty thriller with excellent performances (Mark Wahlberg, Saoirse Ronan, Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon), directed by LOTR’s Peter Jackson.
- The Sons of Sam: Descent into Darkness (2021)
Coming to Netflix: May 5 Language: English The Skinny: During the summer of 1977, a killer known as the Son of Sam kept New York City on edge with a series of brutal murders. Eventually, the Son of Sam, real name David Berkowitz, was captured and convicted, but journalist Maury Terry was convinced the murders were linked to a satanic cult. Terry was adamant Berkowitz had not acted alone, spending the decades since his arrest and conviction attempting to prove that the web of darkness behind the murders went deeper than just Berkowitz. Netflix docuseries – this one goes four episodes – are popular and well made (think Making a Murderer, Tiger King), so there’s every reason to think this will be awesome.
- Jupiter’s Legacy (Season 1, 2021)
Coming to Netflix: May 7 Language: English The skinny: The success of avant-garde comic title adaptations such as The Boys means a more diverse (and even subversive) plot is well suited to steaming television, and there are high hopes for Matt Millar’s Jupiter’s Legacy. The first generation of superheroes emerged in the 1930s and they are getting older, so they need to get their rebellious children up to scratch to combat the supervillain Baryon. With pros like Josh Duhamel, Ben Daniels, and Leslie Bibb on board, this is well worth checking out.
- Money, Explained (2021)
Release Date: May 11 Language: English The skinny: This Netflix collaboration with Vox on $$$ is not only interesting, but it’s also important too. The series takes you through all sorts of scenarios to help you get a better handle on your finances, without making it seem to put together by your less than charismatic bank manager. Whether it’s talking about taxes and savings, credit cards, casinos, crypto, or scams, there’s plenty of well-presented information.
- Oxygen (2021)
Coming to Netflix: May 12 Language: French/English subtitles The skinny: This sci-fi thriller stars the awesome Melanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds, Now You See Me) who is trapped inside some sort of hi-tech medical contraption with only 90 minutes worth of oxygen before it runs out and she dies. Directed by Axendre Aja (Horns, The Hills Have Eyes), Oxygen should be full of edge of your seat tension and suspense.
- Love, Death & Robots (Volume 2, 2021)
Coming to Netflix: 14 May Language: English The skinny: The success of the first anthology (which won five Emmy’s) meant that it was only a matter of time before Love, Death, and Robots returned, this time with eight weird and wonderful animated shorts delving into elements of sci-fi, horror, fantasy, comedy, and the completely absurd (like a massive, naked giant for instance). Created by Tim Miller (David Fincher is an executive producer), Love, Death, and Robots brings together a global team of directors and animation studios to push and expand the medium, which means we get to enjoy the brilliant results of this animation innovation.
- Army of the Dead (2021)
Coming to Netflix: May 21 Language: English The skinny: A zombie action heist movie directed by Zack Snyder, who is coming off the tumult from his final cut of Justice League. This movie features an ensemble cast of cult heroes and “I know that guy” actors led by badass Dave Bautista and Ghost’s Omari Hardwick. All I know is this: “After a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries takes the ultimate gamble by venturing into the quarantine zone for the greatest heist ever.” I’m in. This shit is going to be wild!
- Eden (Season One, 2021)
Coming to Netflix: May 27 Language: Japanese/English subtitles The skinny: “No one must know there is a human here.” The sci-fi fantasy series Eden is set thousands of years in the future, where a city known as “Eden 3” is inhabited by robots whose former masters vanished an age ago. In this world of machines, two farmer robots find a human girl and decide to raise her secretly in a safe haven outside Eden. The latest Netflix Original foray into Japanese anime is directed by Yasuhiro Irie (Fullmetal Alchemist) and features concept designer Toshihiro Kawamoto (Cowboy Bebop), so there’s a lot of talent on board to bring this fresh concept to life.
Bonus: Never Back Down (2008)
If you’re looking for something similar to The Best of the Best but from this century, there’s Never Back Down (2008) – it’s about MMA fighting, a girl, and the new kid in town, with all sorts of famous names popping up in the process.
